Emergency WASH response to most vulnerable conflict/drought affected people in humanitarian crisis in Somalia
The devastating effects of drought/floods between 2020 to mid-2023 followed by El Nino slowed down the recovery process. Water shortages are at critical levels exposing vulnerable people to additional risk. Drought-induced displacements are on the increase creating a severe lack of access to safe water and sanitation facilities and compromised hygiene and sanitation practices increasing the risk of AWD outbreak. Climate change and variability are increasingly understood as major drivers of conflict in Somalia as the struggle for dwindling resources exacerbate clan divisions and inter-clan conflict. Climate change disrupts rural livelihoods resulting in rapid urbanization which in turn contributes to high rates of displacements that increase prevalence of protection threats. The current price of water is high and unaffordable to majority that have lost their means of livelihood. This project targets population groups that are drought displaced including persons with disability. Delivery of these interventions will ensure that community institutions like schools, health facilities and nutrition centers are supported to access services.
